In recent years, I was actually more excited/thankful to open a present and find inside a pair of pants or nice buttoned shirt, or a book I had been aching to read… all the while casually adding a game or CD to my list and not really caring whether I got those things or not. Quite the opposite mentality from my childhood years.

This year, I honestly had a LOT of trouble figuring out what I wanted for Christmas this year. It seems that clothes are now a given regardless each year, but beyond that I didn’t really want anything. Finally I settled on a Playstation 3 – as I hadn’t had a new game system in a couple of years – as well as a few knick-knacks. I just opened all of my presents today and got everything I (grudgingly) asked for, yet most of the joy seems to be gone from Christmas this year.

It could be a multitude of things. The dreary weather has done nothing to lift my spirits. Of course, there is also the predictability of knowing what I’m getting. I think mainly though, I’m missing my family pretty badly. This will be the fourth Christmas that mom and I have spent either by ourselves, or with someone else. Mom and I both hope that someday, everyone will put their petty fucking differences aside, quit living in the past, and enjoy themselves and love one another, as families are supposed to do.

This should be a happy time of year, but I feel unbelievably depressed. I know it will all pass soon enough, and I at least know now what my priorities are in terms of the holidays. (Just another part of growing older, and maybe wiser.) I want to celebrate togetherness and happiness as I used to. I want to smile and laugh and watch sports on TV with my cousins and be a lazy bum from having eaten way too much food. Someday, I even want children of my own, so I can admire their expressions as they enjoy their first holidays, tearing apart boxes, glowing over that one toy they wanted, them whining to me why they didn’t get a particular toy – as I would have at their age, me laughing inside as I explain to them how Santa, like the rest of us, is only human and is occasionally forgetful and pressed for time.

Enough ranting from me. I wish you all a wonderful holiday, and I hope you all realize the true importance of these times – lessons of togetherness, happiness, and cheer that should be applied to every single day of the year.

I can understand not wanting to ruin the sanctity of the games and all that noble bullshit, and that China is the host country and all…but this is ridiculous. As of last count, China has almost 50 gold medals in these games, a fair number of which probably shouldn’t count due to the age discrepancies of their gymnasts.

(The USA still leads in the overall medal count. So suck on that.)

Another thing that pissed me off royally was the beach volleyball gold medal game last night between the USA and China. In the second set, with the USA leading, one of the Chinese players (in my eyes, anyway) feigned an injury, probably to buy time and try and throw off the rhythm of the American team. I know stuff like that happens in sports pretty frequently, but it’s the Olympics, and I think feigning injury like that, in that situation, is really lame.

(The strategy didn’t work too well. The USA won their game, and the gold medal. Suck on that times two.)

Honestly, I thought anyone could have won the contest. From what I heard, everyone had pretty good sets. Maybe the difference with mine is that I changed things up a bit and tried to fit several genres into as short a time as possible. As one of the judges told me, “You went out there and took risks. I really liked that.”

While DJ Faust was playing his set, all the competing acts were called into the waiting room. The guy who called us in looked around and said Jordy’s name. (Jordy was sitting to my right) He informed Jordy that he won the crowd vote, so the Rev Room would cover his drink tab. He then looked around again and asked for Chamelion, at which point I gestured to myself. He handed me the wad of cash, and I about lost it.

It felt really good getting congrats from all my fellow DJs and my friends and others. I just hope that this event gets exposure and gigs for EVERYONE, because we all have an upside, in my honest opinion. What this means for me personally is, I’ll get to headline the next Rev Room show, as well as DJ at the next outontherock.com show. I also talked to my friend Shane, resident DJ and booking manager for Discovery, and he’s got me slated to play there again on August 30th. I’ll update the calendar accordingly once I find out where I’m playing, and when.

I do want to say thanks to all my friends and random strangers at the show who offered support and kind words and congratulations. Without you guys and my love for this wonderful thing called electronic music, I would really have no reason to play. Much love.

I remember being introduced to his comedy about eight or nine years ago. My grandmother was giving me a haircut, and his “You Are All DIseased” special was on HBO. Nana shook her head at his foul language, but amid his language and cutting remarks, I inwardly laughed at (and agreed with) a lot of his viewpoints on random subjects, especially religion. I’m kinda glad she didn’t hear what he had to say on that – or, better yet, glad she didn’t hear me laughing about it – or she probably would have flipped out. From that day, I sought out his other material. I enjoy almost all his works, and I own all three books he has released.

Truly a sad day. yet he is one of the very few entertainers whose memory I would toast. I would even go the extra mile and get trashed in his honor.
